To be a valid Sudoku puzzle, the givens don't need to be in an aesthetically pleasing symmetrical alignment. This is only a tradition started by Nikoli, inc. (refer to our History of Sudoku section). When you choose to generate a puzzle with a random alignment, then one value will be placed into the puzzle grid at a time at random locations (and removed one at a time accordingly) until the puzzle reaches a unique solution at the desired skill level.
