In mouse mode, use the mouse wheel, the number keys on your keyboard, or their corresponding buttons on the toolbar to choose a number. Once one of the numbers (single integer digits 1-9) has been selected, you can then click on any cell in the puzzle and the value of that cell will be updated with the number that you have previously selected. You can insert that same number into any number of cells without re-selecting it on the keyboard or toolbar. The selected (active) number is indicated as a depressed button on the toolbar.
Try the mouse wheel and see if you're not sold on mouse mode!
You can also select the number zero on your keyboard to select the delete option. For more information see the Delete Command.
